Art

Words and Artwork by Kate Escolin

My pieces were created almost a year apart from each other. I think it is an extremely honest depiction of how my idea of love and passion has shifted and evolved through time.

This was the first piece I drew back in March 2020, when we were all hiding from the world. It was a time of constant Discord calls and Zoom calls until sunrise. After awhile my friends and I would begin to run out of quizzes, games, and everyone's favourite *blank* questions. So we turned to more personal conversation topics of love, life, dreams and fears. This piece was inspired by one of those conversations and by one of my dearest friends.

It was clear during those calls that I had a big fear of commitment and love but she never failed to make me snap out of that mindset and remind me that I was deserving of love. It can take just one person to create your trust issues but also one friend to help you conquer them.

I am truly a hopeless romantic when it comes to other people but I find it hard to take my own advice. I used to think love wasn’t for me or was unattainable (which you can clearly see from the previous piece) but I’ve come to realize that this is not the case. I made this piece as a sort of love letter and reminder to myself and to anyone else who struggles to see their own value. I am absolutely deserving of a big time kind of love and so is everyone else. It may all sound dramatic and too unbelievable to some people but why not romanticise your life when you can?

Life is simultaneously too short to not love as hard as you can but also too long to spend it with someone who doesn’t love you passionately.
