Top Music of 2021

There has never been a better time to be reading Be Nothing Club’s top music of 2021, no single moment in history is more suited to you reading this than right now. I polled our readers and the data shows that you’ve chosen the perfect time to take a look at our favourite albums, songs, musical moments from the year with as many stops and starts as a Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

This is less a controversial numbered list of random music that was released this year, more a random list of our favourite bits that were released this year.

Silk Sonic - An Evening With Silk Sonic

Bruno Mars + Anderson Paak + 70’s stylists = a lovely time for all. The album is a fun reboot of classic soul music, with modern touches from both collaborators. Songs sound both modern and like they were potential theme songs for Shaft.

Alice Morton - Vertigo

This music video looks like if Guillermo del Toro was asked to direct the new Resident Evil film and only said yes because he needed the money. Alice Morton’s song is catchy and well worth a listen!

just for me - pinkpantheress

A consequence of getting older is feeling older, and there’s nothing out there that makes me feel older than people who are younger than me using an early 2000’s aesthetic because it’s ‘cool’. It’s not. The early 2000’s were pathetically uncool, so all these young people bringing them back can just stop please. Great song though.

Vince Staples - Tiny Desk

“Whether you have two legs or no legs, we love you.” Vince Staples says after the opening song of his Tiny Desk set. What about one-legged people Vince? His latest self-titled album was one of my highlights of the year, and this live set adds a lot - the instrumentation is great.

Olivia Rodrigo - drivers licence

God I wish I was a heartbroken 17 year old again. Not really, but the heartbroken 17 year olds of today are spoiled with this song. Bonus points this year for Olivia for announcing a gig in Cork. Olivia Rodrigo Live At The Marquee just rolls off the tongue.

Dave - Verdansk

For a good week or two after this song was released, I listened to it nearly every day. One of my favourite parts was when Dave gave a shoutout to Killarney. I couldn’t believe he was dropping the American tourist capital of Ireland into a song but I loved it. Maybe he went there on holidays and had a nice time. Dave and his friends wandering around Muckross House, taking a hike out to Torc Waterfall, all the bits.

But then I showed the song to my girlfriend who promptly pointed out that he was saying the name of the singer Kehlani. And now we’re here.

LEWWAB - come thru

It wouldn’t be a BNC music year in review without mentioning LEWWAB. come thru is the boppest of bops - mup LEWWAB.
