Music & Identity

Words and Artwork by Jonah Anderson

Music and identity speak to each other. In the last number of months when days have held a deafening silence, the comfort of sliding on a pair of headphones has allowed me to explore new and different genres. Challenging the discomfort in moving away from Spotify's convenient ‘Made For You’ playlists has provided the space to learn something new about myself.

My expanding awareness of storytelling in music has helped me move forwards rather than backwards. Being lost in the thoughts of somebody else, accompanied by a new and different beat makes you approach the day slightly differently. It is less familiar, something new to be curious about. With fond memories of music blaring at parties, weddings and get-togethers, exploring beyond my own nostalgia has allowed me to continue to grow, learn and develop a sense of where I am now. Although we will be dancing together again soon, the music I will bring will speak to another part of me. A part which may be slightly more eclectic, but carries an authentic sense of the journey I’ve been on.

The musicians featured in this collection include Phil Lynott, Harry Styles, Erica Cody, Matt Healy (The 1975), CMAT and Kurt Cobain.
